The quick answer is, there is no right way and there is no wrong way. Chances are whatever you do, your child will grow up and tell you something that could have been different, just like you did with your parents.
What you can do however is consciously choose to be the type of parent you want to be, and the type of role model you want to serve as. Every child looks up to their parents and wants nothing more than to be loved and to be able to celebrate and admire their mom or dad.
You get to choose the role model you want to be. What you choose to do, say, the actions you take in your own life, will all be recorded in your child's mind and effect their future.
So while there is no right or wrong, there are choices that can be made that can be encouraging, supportive, tolerant, playful, etc.
Being an outstanding parent means deciding now on what you have to change within yourself so you can be the person you want to be as a role model for your child.
